Wanting More Friends

What does it mean to want more friends in your life? It doesn’t mean you’re necessarily lonely (although that might be part of it) and it doesn’t mean you don’t have some friends already. Wanting more friends means that you have a desire for connection, and while the friends you’re with might be great they perhaps aren’t there for you in the way you’d like.

Sometimes a new set of life circumstances will prompt us to seek out more friends. Our friends are all getting married (or divorced), we just moved to a new town, or had a baby… or many other reasons we might be looking for some new people in our life. Change is constant and our attitudes and likes evolve with the years. Wanting to find more friends for a variety of reasons is very common.

Maybe you’re just looking for a few folks to do things with, confide in, or call at the end of the day just for a laugh. Most people who have a desire for more friends are afraid to tell anyone that. As a culture we tend to look down our noses at people who say they’re looking for friends, so most people keep this desire to themselves for fear that they’ll teased or be misunderstood.

But guess what? There’s nothing wrong with wanting more friends. Even if you are feeling lonely, bravo to you for wanting to do something about it. Don’t be ashamed of it. While some might be snobbish about the subject of loneliness others will admire the fact that you’re bringing it up because they’re probably feeling lonely, too. Loneliness comes from a lot of different places, and people who have tons of friends can experience it just as much as someone with a small social circle.

It should also be noted that even if you have friends now, a desire to meet more people doesn’t mean that you’re through with your older friendships. Longtime friendships can change but that doesn’t mean they lose their value in your life. You might have pals that you see a few times a year only and others you call every day. The more friends you have, the more you’ll have the right people in your life to give you the support and connection you desire.
