Jude's Gentle Giants by Les Graham

Back Cover Blurb:

Everyone has a dream and that is true of Jude Bonner, a young man growing up on a farm in Belgrade, Minnesota in 2005. Jude gets his wish to have and train a team of Percheron draft horses, Pete and Joe. As is often the case with dreams, the reality turns out to be a little more challenging than he expects. Jude finds himself learning and growing along with his colts as a bond is forged.

Jude discovers what it means to have character, integrity, discipline, love, faith and hardship. Jude battles bullies, harsh winters, money, and forgiveness with the help of his family, Pete, Joe and his trusty dog, Fuzz.

“Thinking Back”

It was another round of tests that had me cooped up in the St. Cloud hospital. God is not a big fan of self pity, but that particular day I had a hard time not feeling sorry for Jude Bonner. I tried praying, reading, playing solitaire but I could not stay focused on any of them. I was having an old fashioned pity party as I gazed out the window of my hospital room. The sky was a deep blue and not a cloud in sight. Just as a nurse opened my door, I thought I caught a glimpse of something floating in the air. As she took my vitals she stood between the window and me and blocked any chance for me to figure out what I had seen. As soon as she left, I looked out the window again. I saw another one, a thistle seed, dancing through the air in slow motion. A little smile came across my face as I watched it fade away into the sky. Thistle seeds travel with the air currents in the fall, and fall is my favorite time of the year. It’s funny how God works at times. That thistle seed took me back to my high schools days. I didn’t know it at the time, but those high schools days were pretty simple compared to now. Sure I was ridiculed for my faith in Jesus Christ. Keeping my grades up did not come easy for me, and I had a lot of chores to do at home. To top it off, I developed a growing obsession with a Percheron draft mare named Molly. As I watched more thistle seeds float by, I thought back to what God did with that obsession. Yes, God answered my high school prayers, the joy it brought me, along with all of the hard work and challenges. I lay there thinking back to the wins and losses of coming of age.
