Welcome Canadian Author Susan Anne Mason

Please help me welcome Susan Anne Mason to the Barn Door Book Loft.

First Question: Is there a story behind your book “Betrayed Hearts”?
The basis of my story began when I read a newspaper article about a father who had killed his family—all except one little girl. All I could think of was: what would it be like to grow up alone and find out about the tragedy that took your family away? Then I asked “What if there was another child who survived, and the little girl, now grown up, discovered she had a sister.”

Makes sense. Headline news … and then “What if …”
Question: What distracts you from writing the easiest?
Emails, Facebook and Pinterest. I start off reading emails, follow links to blogs and the next thing I know an hour has passed! That and Google searches for research!

Question: What kind of books do you enjoy reading?
I love Christian romance, both contemporary and historical.  A contemporary author I love is Katie Ganshert. Her novel “Wishing on Willows” was marvelous. I have so many favorite historical authors, it’s hard to pick one to recommend. I love all Julie Lessman’s books, as well as Laura Frantz’s and Tamera Alexander’s.

Question: Which character in your new release most interested you while you wrote? Why?
My heroine, Lily, intrigued me. I loved her journey — going from being unloved, and feeling unworthy, to finding God’s unconditional love through the hero, Nick.

Question: What is your favorite season of the year?
Spring. After our harsh Canadian winters, I love when all the trees and flowers come back to life and color the world.

I’ve always thought there was something special about the “New Green” of spring!
Question: Where is your favorite place to travel/vacation?
I have two! My favorite place to go when my kids were younger was Disney World in Florida. There is something magical about that place and seeing my kids enjoy it made special memories. The second place is the beach at Wildwood, New Jersey. I love the ocean and the clean white beaches there.

Question: Are there spiritual themes you like to write about?
Most definitely! I love exploring themes of forgiveness and redemption. In “Betrayed Hearts”, Lily feels stained by past sins, unworthy of love. Watching her blossom under Nick’s unconditional love, which in turn teaches her about God’s constant love, is almost as thrilling as the romance itself.

Question: Where do you escape for some quiet time to reflect, pray, read, etc?
There is a small, man-made lake near our house. When the weather cooperates, I like to walk the paths around the lake and reflect on everything I’m grateful for.

Question: Can you share a verse or Scripture passage with us that is special to you?
Delight yourself in the LORD; And He will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4
This verse gave me hope, knowing that if I persevered, God would give me the desire of my heart — to one day become a published author! And it came true big time!

Question: When is your next book due out and what can you tell us about it?
My second release with White Rose Publishing, Wayward Hearts, is due out in December 2014. It’s the story of Lily’s friend, Maxi North, a Manhattan stylist, who is forced to return to Rainbow Falls for her father’s funeral. While she tries to find care for her mother who suffers from MS, Maxi must confront painful memories of her past, as well as her unresolved feelings for her former best friend, Jason Hanley.
