A Warm Welcome to Cynthia Hickey!

WWelcome, Cynthia! Good to have you visiting today. Can you tell us a bit about your family, and what it is like where you live?
I live in Surprise, Arizona. It’s a desert, hot in the summer and mild in the winter. Except for this winter … we didn’t have one. Just high seventy temperatures, which is lovely, but makes me nervous for the summer. I grew up in the Ozark foothills of Arkansas. I miss the beautiful greenery there.

Is there a story behind An Unconventional Lady? This is the second book in my Harvey Girl series. While researching for a unique idea for a book series, I stumbled upon stories of these amazing women who were waitresses for the Fred Harvey Company. History has deemed them the Women Who Tamed the West. Harvey girls signed a six-month contract, promising not to marry within that time period. Most of them found their husbands along the way and moved west. I enjoy writing about strong courageous women who had a part in settling this great country of ours.

Did you have a specific theme in mind as you wrote An Unconventional Lady? Did a theme pop out as you finished the book? Did the theme change?
Most of my books deal with the issues I struggle with daily. Letting Go and Letting God. I tend to want to control things myself and write about the same time of women who see God’s blessing as they relinquish the reins.

What is the last thing you wrote?
The last thing I wrote was the fourth, and final, book in the series, titled A Doctor’s Heart.

What’s the first thing you ever wrote that you still have?
I wish I still had the stories I wrote as a child. The only one I have, that I will someday rewrite and self-pub is titled Pursued by Evil and is a romantic suspense that deals with an evil cult following.

What’s your favorite genre of writing?
I love writing cozy mysteries, such fun, and historical romance. I can’t pick a favorite out of the two. I’m blessed to be able to write both.

Do you have a writing system? What works best for you?
I write 3,000 words a day, Monday thru Friday. If I have time on the weekends, you will usually find me trying to write another 1,000 or so inbetween laundry and errands. I can’t NOT write. It’s a part of me.

Where do you most like to write?
I write best at my desk with my laptop. I’m comfortable there.

How do you find the time to write?
In May 2013, God blessed me by allowing me to quit my day job and write full time. I’ve been busy ever since.

Do you believe in writer’s block? If so how often do you get it? How do you fix it?
Writer’s block is a real thing. I get it occasionally, and go do the dishes or dust something to allow my brain a rest. Then, I’m back at the computer to finish my word count. I don’t let the writer’s block win.

Do you ever go back to an old idea long after you abandoned it?
Oh, yes. Every story I come up with will see the light of day in one form or another.

What character that you’ve created most resembles you?
Summer Meadows from my first cozy mystery series, The Summer Meadows Mysteries. We’re both ditzy and impulsive.

When is your next book due out and can you tell us about it?
An Unconventional Lady releases April 1, and The Texas Ranger’s Heart (Harvey Girl book 3) releases July 1. I’ve had so much fun writing this series.
