Maine Author Denise Lilly

Hello Denise! Welcome to the Barn Door Book Loft. Is there a story behind your book Cling: Faith Lessons from my Son’s Early Years?

When I was pregnant with my first son, I noticed more and more of my blog posts were about him and how he was already changing me. After he was born, I started posting about things I admired in him as a baby - his strength, gumption, and unwavering trust. During his second year of life, while I was pregnant with his brother, I used those posts to write this book.

What started you on your writing journey?

When I was a child, I wrote songs, plays and short stories constantly. Even before I could physically write, I composed stories for my mom to transcribe. I’ve always enjoyed writing, but I only recently started pursuing it as a career.

What distracts you from writing the easiest?

My kids, of course! They are my greatest inspiration and my greatest distraction. It’s hard to cultivate the time to pursue my craft, but thankfully, they both nap!

What kind of books do you enjoy reading?

I mostly read nonfiction, often Christian Living or inspirational. I’m currently reading Second Suns about two doctors trying to alleviate blindness worldwide. Donald Miller is my favorite author, and my two favorite books from 2013 were One Thousands Gifts by Ann Voskamp and Not For Sale by David Batstone.

What is your favorite season of the year?

Fall. I live in Maine where the colors are astounding, but it’s also a reflective time of year. I recently read this quote by Gretel Ehrlich, which perfectly sums up the mystery of fall: “All...autumn we hear a double voice: one says everything is ripe, the other says everything is dying. The paradox is exquisite.”

What do you like most about the area where you live and/or grew up?

I love the people of Maine, which is where I have spent most my life. Mainers are both ruggedly individualistic and abnormally helpful to each other. Above all, Maine raises hard workers.

Where is your favorite place to travel/vacation in?

My husband and I lived in Seattle for a few years, and we always jump at the opportunity to go back. Our first son was born there, and some of Cling is actually set there. It’s a beautiful place with many fond memories.

Thanks for sharing with us today!
