A Warm Welcome to Marianne Evans

Is there a story behind your book Devotion?

There sure is! I had just finished writing my Woodland books – a series of Christian/Inspirational romances for Pelican Book Group. A reader touched base with me via e-mail and posed the following request: ‘I’ve noticed, even in my church community that there are a number of marriages facing turmoil and divorce. Have you ever thought of exploring the topic not just of boy-meets-girl romance, but of how to maintain and solidify a long-term, committed relationship for a Christian couple?’ I had just met the character of Kellen Rossiter (more on that below), who is a handsome, successful, dynamic Christian who is happily married to his beautiful wife Juliet. I loved this pair from their first interactions in Hearts Key, but that e-mail set fire to my heart. Their tempestuous, but hope-filled story was born, and Devotion came to be.

What started you on your writing journey?
A passion for the written word. There’s something so meaningful to me about taking the scenes, characters and circumstances God delivers to my heart and bringing them to life with the words He brings.

What distracts you from writing the easiest?
Social Media. Without question or doubt.

What kind of books do you enjoy reading? (Book recommendations very welcome!)
I am completely and totally blown away by the books of Karen Kingsbury. Naturally, with over fifty books in publication, I’ve liked some better than others, however, she’s never disappointed me. She’s an incredible wordsmith and her writing is simply anointed and a huge blessing to me!

Which character in your new release most interested you while you wrote? Why?
Kellen Rossiter. I “met” him in my White Rose Publishing romance, Hearts Key as a secondary character and immediately he intrigued me. Edgy and charismatic, driven from a professional standpoint yet devout in his faith and very strong in character—he’s a complex, interesting mix. But he was happily married, so I thought his story was finished with his debut in Hearts Key. Until I got that e-mail asking me to explore the topic of marriage. Definitely God at work in letting me know what He wanted written and conveyed to my readers, because when Devotion came to life, I had some serious conversations with God, saying things like, “Really, Lord? Infidelity? A good Christian man with a good Christian wife? How do You want me to pull that off?” As always, He delivered!

If you were a style of music, what style would you be?
A poignant, tender ballad full of rich harmony and beautiful lyrics.

What is your favorite season of the year?
Autumn. I live in Michigan, and the explosion of colors, the bright leaves and the contrast of light and shadow is just incredible. I love to wander the shoreline of any of the great lakes when the tree leaves are turning and the icy-blue water rolls in with whitecaps and sparkles. Nothing like it on earth.

Has some place you have traveled inspired something in your writing?
Nashville and Tennessee. I’d move there in a heartbeat if my family ties weren’t so closely bound to Michigan. Tennessee has the greatest vibe, and my husband and I have loved driving there for long weekends of research. (Nashville is the setting for Devotion!)

Where do you escape for some quiet time to reflect, pray, read, etc?
My bedroom, before my husband comes in to sleep. I journal, read my daily devotions and simply unwind with God.

Share a verse or Scripture passage with us that is special to you. (and why it's special)
Proverbs 3:5-6 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. He will make your path straight.’ I inscribe each book I autograph with this Scripture verse because it speaks to the faith we need to cling to – the faith that will never let us down and will always lead us to what’s GOOD.

When is your next book due out and can you tell us about it?
Jodie’s Song, a Heart’s Haven novella, releases in the spring of 2014 from Pelican Book Group. Jodie’s song captures the struggle to follow God’s plan when life takes an unexpected—and in some ways unwelcome—turn. The story resounds with hope and was a wonderful journey to take. After that will come the ‘Sisters in Spirit’ series, also from White Rose Publishing/Pelican Book Group. The Sisters series centers on four childhood friends committed to purity and one another as they are taken on the adventure of a life time through their love of music. God leads them to successes, challenges, and four remarkable men, accomplishing His plan in ways these girls would never have expected or dreamed possible!

Hello to the BDBL ladies. Thanks for having Marianne here. A lovely lady. Marianne, this is a good topic to write about. So, so many broken marriages. One reason now-days too many go into with the idea that if it doesn't work we can always get a divorce. Instead of thinking, this is a lifetime commitment , am I really ready to do this? Then there are some who just let the Devil get a toe in the door, and do wrongs instead of getting on their knees and asking GOD for help against the temptation. Then a lot of lives are hurt. I would love to add this book to the others I have of yours.
Thanks foe a chance. Maxie mac262(at)me(dot)com

I would love to read this book. I like to read the boy meets girl romance, but as someone who has been married for 35 years, I love to read books about people who have been married a while and overcome obstacles to stay married. There aren't near as many of those out there. Thank you for helping to fill that gap.

There is a need in the Christian community for this type of devotional. I know it will be a blessing to someone.
