Suspense Author Heidi Glick

Congratulations on the release of Dog Tags, Heidi! And welcome to the Barn Door Book Loft.

Is there a story behind your book Dog Tags?

While I was writing the book, my dad was dying from ALS and died before I signed a contract on the novel.  Just as I dealt with grief and loss, the hero and heroine of the story also deal with great loss. The hero, Mark Graham, loses his best friend. The heroine, Beth Martindale, loses her brother.

So sorry about your dad. What started you on your writing journey?

I acted in a play at my church when I was a teen. I wanted a different role, but I was too young. An adult encouraged me to write my own plays. As a teen, I wrote several plays. Later on, I began writing stories and two magazine articles.

What distracts you from writing the easiest?

Social media or my family distract me the most. My family is a good distraction, and something I shouldn't ignore. Social media, on the other hand, is something I need to ignore at times.

What kind of books do you enjoy reading?

I enjoy reading suspense and romantic suspense. I like books with unexpected twists and turns. I like books with strong female characters.

What makes you smile and/or laugh out loud?

My baby makes me smile. I like it when he tries to talk to me.

What is your favorite season of the year?

Fall is my favorite season. I like to eat breakfast at the Mill restaurant in Clifton, Ohio, and watch the leaves change color.

What do you like most about the area where you live and/or grew up?

I grew up in southern California. I like the warm weather, friendly people, and local attractions.

Where is your favorite place to travel/vacation in?

My favorite places to travel are California and Florida.

Do you have any favorite recipes you'd like to share with us?

I’d like to share two recipes for food mentioned in the book.

Mrs. Graham's Pistachio Salad*

1 (3 ounce) package of instant pistachio pudding mix
1 (12 ounce) tub of imitation whipped cream (thawed)
1 cup of miniature marshmallows
1 20 ounce can of crushed pineapple with juice
1 cup of chopped walnuts (or whatever nuts you like; pecans work well too)
3 bananas, sliced

Fold together the pudding mix and imitation whipped cream
Add rest of ingredients and refrigerate at least six hours.

(Cottage cheese--about a cup or two--could be added to this.)
(I often leave out the 3 bananas and/or the marshmallows.)
This is what I like about this recipe--it is versatile--you can add and/or subtract ingredients, and the salad still turns out.

Beth's Chocolate Buckeyes Recipe*

5 1/2 cups confectioner's sugar
1 cup butter
2 cups peanut butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Combine the above ingredients and knead until smooth.
Form into 1" balls, place on wax paper, and refrigerate while you melt the chocolate:
1/4 pound dipping chocolate
Cut/slice the dipping chocolate into strips/pieces and using double boiler, melt the chocolate.
With a toothpick, dip each ball into the melted chocolate being careful to leave top uncoated.
Place on wax paper and refrigerate until chocolate has cooled and pieces are firm.

*Recipes courtesy of my mother-in-law, Betty Glick.

Are there spiritual themes you like to write about?

I like to write about faith and forgiveness.

Where do you escape for some quiet time to reflect, pray, read, etc?

I like to go to a spare bedroom in my home or in any unoccupied room where it’s quiet.

Share a verse or Scripture passage with us that is special to you.

Isaiah 61:3 is important to me because it speaks about beauty instead of ashes, and that’s what God has been doing in my life. God took the pain of me losing my dad as well as the pain of infertility and brought me a beautiful baby boy and opened the door to publication.

When is your next book due out and can you tell us about it?

I’m working on the sequel/spin off to Dog Tags. It’s loosely titled Covert Affair and will include characters from Dog Tags.

Thanks for sharing with us, Heidi!
