Welcome Christian Author, Janet K. Brown

Janet K. Brown is here to talk about her paranormal Young Adult book. Please read on to learn more about her and what inspired the book.

Is there a story behind Victoria and The Ghost?

Like my character, Victoria, I discovered the deserted town of Clara, Texas. A church, a rectory, and a cemetery mark the town’s once promise of greatness. I walked the cemetery plots and felt a peace among the memorials. Flat plains with dry grass, crops, and cows stretched across the landscape as far as my gaze could see. There, with the tombstones and flowers that had been planted or placed on graves, I determined to learn the history of the area.

A story turned over in my mind of a girl who feels a mother’s rejection, a father’s unreasonable requirement, and the loss of friends and familiar landmarks. When I heard the legend of the ghost of Colonel Specht, called the baron of Clara, I decided this girl and this ghost bore common problems. They needed each other. Through the sad story of a displaced German who loved Clara, Texas, Victoria will learn about reality, love, and truth.

What distracts you from writing the easiest?

I’ve really found doing social networking hinders my writing time.

What kind of books do you enjoy reading?

I read lots of different genres.. Right now, I’ve just started Peg Phifer’s book To See the Sun. I just finished Laura Scott’s Lawman-in-charge. At the same time, I’m reading a non-fiction, Ghost stories from Fort Sill (Oklahoma). I follow a daily 365 devotion book Food for the Hungry Heart. I love mysteries & suspense, too. I’m a slow reader, so I usually take about 10 days to finish a novel.

Which character in your new release most interested you while you wrote? Why?

The pastor’s wife, Gretchen Mertens, another displaced German. She’s a bit of an enigma, but you got to love her.

If you were a style of music, what style would you be?

I’d start the day with classical (an opera), Through the day, I’d be all country, but I’d end the day with soft rock. Yep, I’ve got varied tastes in music & books.

What is your strangest habit?

I sleep with my feet out from under the cover even in cold weather, but I always have to cover my shoulders. Go figure.

What is a favorite memory from your childhood?

A friend and I planned our own zoo with the pets, gymnastics & clowns. We invited the whole neighborhood.

Are there spiritual themes you like to write about?

I write about the message of hope with God. God healed me emotionally from compulsive overeating, nail-biting, and emotional outbursts. I like to tell the stories of others with addictions or compulsions that can only be healed through God’s power.

Where do you escape for some quiet time to reflect, pray, read, etc?

I sit on our back patio overlooking our swimming pool in the morning right after breakfast. I never feel closer to God than when I’m out where I can see the flowers & trees & thank God for a husband who loves working in the yard. I watch birds & butterflies. Gratitude swells. Even in the hottest days of the summer, I can sit outside early in the morning. Most times, I still can go there in the winter with an afghan over my heavy robe. Last week, we had 1 rainy day. (Thank you, Jesus) The only dry spot on the patio was up near the door. I sat with my feet propped up on my bench that I bought in the Texas hill country, with bluebonnets painted on it. I prayed and gave God praise until my feet started getting wet.

When is your next book due out and can you tell us about it?

I have no new ones under contract, yet. One publisher asked for the full manuscript of my 365 daily devotions for compulsive overeaters with a working title of God’s Way or the My Way. I sent it to him last week, so the ball is in his court. I’ve finished an inspirational romance, so I’m preparing it to pitch @ the ACFW conference next month. Just keeping my fingers crossed & starting on a sequel to Victoria and the Ghost.
