with JoAnn Durgin

Welcome back to the Barn Door Book Loft, JoAnn!
Can you tell us a little about your new release?

Twin Hearts features the parallel and simultaneous love stories of Louisiana twins Josh and Rebekah (“Beck”) Grant. They are each other’s best friend, and share a loving, teasing relationship. Both are volunteers in a Christian organization called TeamWork Missions (led by my core characters in The Lewis Legacy Series, Sam and Lexa Lewis). Even if someone hasn’t read the first two books in the series, Awakening and Second Time Around, they can pick right up with this one! Josh was my wayward sheep in the first book, and as Twin Hearts begins, it’s more than four years later and time for him to find his redemption. Josh is now an up-and-coming attorney in Baton Rouge, and he goes to Houston to make his apologies to Sam, his close friend and former mentor. His last meeting with another TeamWork member still haunts him, and when he also seeks her forgiveness, he gets the shock of his life. It’s the big “secret” revealed early on in this book; Josh isn’t looking for love, but he finds it in a most unexpected and tender way. Rebekah is an elementary school teacher, and she’s at a personal crossroads. She has two men vying for her heart: a dashing British aristocrat offering her the world, and a quiet, faithful lumber man who’s also a TeamWork member. In a fun plot twist, a plan is hatched: give the girl what she thinks she wants in order to help her see what she really needs. This book has the love, humor, emotion, romance, realistic dialogue, relatable characters, drama, conflict—all the usual elements I hope readers know they can expect from one of my books.

My teaser about Twin Hearts is this: What do guppy lips, frog legs and a gazebo have to do with anything? Believe it or not, they’re very significant components. There’s another untraditional “twin” dynamic to the story, but readers will have to find that one out for themselves!

What do you hope readers will take away from this book?
Christians aren’t perfect, but we’re forgiven. We sometimes fall prey to the same temptations and sins as the rest of the world. It’s how we ultimately deal with the consequences of our sin that makes all the difference and can make an impact on others. My characters make mistakes—sometimes pretty big ones—and yet they pray, they seek to follow and honor the Lord, and when they stumble and fall, they pick themselves up and keep on going. Some have called my books modern fairy tales with a dash of realism. I let others write the gritty books, although I don’t shy away from the inevitable sadness of life. I’m a firm believer in happy endings; when you reach the conclusion of one of my books, you’ll have a smile on your face.

What is the Lord teaching you, or recently taught you?
It’s self-defeating to compare my writing to anyone else’s. Everyone is different in tone, pacing, voice and style, and what a blessing that is—especially since there are avid readers for every type and genre of Christian fiction. I tell my stories in a God-honoring way without worrying about the “rules,” and as a result, my books are somewhat “outside the box” in terms of pacing and the “formula” in contemporary Christian romance. However, readers are responding positively to my books, and it’s incredibly gratifying when they write to me and share how one of my stories touched them in a unique, special way. It’s always been my prayer that my books will get into the hands of those who most need to read them, and the Lord—in His infinite mercy and wonderful grace—is opening the doors of His choosing in His time.

When is your next book due out and can you tell us about it?
Daydreams is the fourth book in my series, and it should release for the Christmas season 2012. I call Daydreams the “fun one.” It features an early December TeamWork wedding, and goes from NYC to Louisiana to Texas and back, complete with a spunky TeamWork girl who finally meets her perfect match—and also has a big New Year’s Eve shocking twist. I just love writing surprises!
