meet Allie Pleiter

Welcome to The Book loft, Allie.
People talk about life before children—what was your life before writing?
I was theater major in college, and I was working in cultural philanthropy when the dare from a friend got me to try writing my first book. I had young children at home when I started writing, so I have developed an ability to write anywhere, anytime--and that’s been useful.

What book have you recently enjoyed reading?
I just finished THE NIGHT CIRCUS by Erin Morgenstern. It’s the kind of book that sucks you into a world so completely you can’t put it down. Her debut novel, I’d classify it as one of the best books I’ve read this year. I’ve been recommending to anyone who likes fantasy and theatricality in their books.

If you were a dessert, what would you be?
Chocolate creme brulee. Actually anything chocolate would be just fine with me.
If you were to find a purple polka-dotted monster in your kitchen one morning, how would you respond?
Well, I suppose I’d ask if it makes coffee. I’m not really a charming person in the morning so I can’t say I’d be reasonable. Unless it was a purple polka-dotted barrista sent here to make me a mocha every morning. Then I’d probably give it a great big hug.

Tell us about one of your favorite memories or moments in your life.
Our family took a trip to Italy this past summer, which was an amazing adventure given to us by the Make-A-Wish Foundation in honor of my son’s recovery from cancer. We were sitting in a cafe in Rome and it struck all of us how astounding our present circumstances were--how blessed we were to be in Europe, how glad we were CJ was in remission, how relieved we were to have those struggles behind us, how many people worked to get us there. We’ve become staunch supporters of Make-A-Wish because of the power of that trip and that moment. I think it was a pivotal, life-changing memory for all of us, especially my son (who’s very successfully in remission, by the way!).

What's one of your dreaded things to do?
I’m a total baby about the dentist.

What is the Lord teaching you, or recently taught you?
As you can imagine, trust was a big lesson during my son’s medical challenges and the challenges of letting my college daughter go off all the way to Charleston, SC on her own. Little kids present one kind of challenge, teen and adult children present a whole different struggle. I’m learning that His plan is always best, even when I can’t see it.

When is your next book due out and can you tell us about it?
This May I’ll release my fourth historical for the Love Inspired line, HOMEFRONT HERO. It’s a World War I story of an injured war hero, his recovery nurse, the Spanish Influenza epidemic, and the Red Cross sock knitting campaign.

I'm a chocolate and peanut butter addict! Icecream, candy and anything with that combo. I used to eat a slice of bread with peanut butter and chocolate chips on it! Thanks for writing about a firefighter. My dad was a firefighter, loved his job!
