meet Betsy St. Amant

Welcome to The Book Loft, Betsy!
People talk about life before children—what was your life before writing?
I don’t remember either! I have a 3 year old daughter, so yeah – haha! And I’ve been literally writing since I was about 7 years old, making up my own Babysitter Club stories or Sweet Valley tales on our first home computer. I have a ton of old manuscripts that were never completed (and honestly have no plot!) from my childhood days. I got serious about getting published when I was 18 and began attending writer’s conferences and networking. Now I’m 27 with 6 Love Inspired novels under my proverbial belt and this fun YA with Barbour! Writing was always and will always be a part of my soul. 

What book have you recently enjoyed reading?
Oh what a list! ROOMS by James Rubart really grabbed my attention, as did Susie Warren’s latest Christmas tale BABY IT’S COLD OUTSIDE. I also recently enjoyed THE LADY OF MILKWEED MANOR by Julie Klassen. Big fan of all her novels!

If you were a dessert, what would you be?
Definitely cheesecake, because it’s one of my favs, but also because it’s a little like me—sweet and vintage ;)

If you were to find a purple polka-dotted monster in your kitchen one morning, how would you respond?
Well I’m used to my toddler attempting to scare me by randomly throwing blankets over her head and running around the house making ghost sounds, so I’d probably first assume it was her. Once I realized it wasn’t, I’d probably admire his polka-dots, since they are my favorite pattern, and then, once I deciphered if he was a threat (a.k.a., if he was related to the infamous purple people eater or not) I’d probably tell him I liked my eggs scrambled and hand him the spatula.

Tell us about one of your favorite memories or moments in your life.
This is hard to pick! Hmmm… I immediately think about the night my husband proposed when we were just 18 and 19 years old, aboard the New Orleans Steamboat Natchez, or the afternoon my daughter was born and fluttered those long eyelashes at me that have yet to let me go  Writing wise, though, one of my favorite moments was when I was sitting at work and my agent called to tell me Barbour had contracted ADDISON BLAKELY, CONFESSIONS OF A PK. I screamed and caused bit of a scene. I also have loved getting to meet my literary heroes over the years via the ACFW (American Christian Fiction Writers) such as Robin Jones Gunn and Kristen Heitzmann, or being mentored once by Dee Henderson. Dreams come true! God is good!

What's one of your dreaded things to do?
I’m a mommy, so my first thoughts here went immediately to “taking my toddler to potty in a public restroom” (I won’t tell you about the time we walked into a Wal-Mart bathroom, took note of the situation, and immediately fled for our lives) In a more acceptable style answer, I’d say take out the trash. It’s always a risk for my life since our house is off the ground and the stairs in the backyard aren’t the sturdiest, and the cans are big and I have to reeaaacchh…you get the idea. Yes, I’ve fallen once. Yes, my toddler laughed.

What is the Lord teaching you, or recently taught you?
I’m actually still in the middle of a journey, and can’t wait to be on the other side ;) It’s about trusting Him for the rainbow in the middle of the storm. Believing that good can come from bad, and that life’s trials really are worth it later. It’s also a journey about being real, not being predictable or attempting to live up to what is acceptable/expected of you. (sorry you asked? Hehe)

When is your next book due out and can you tell us about it?
My new novel releases in the Spring 2012, and it’s by Love Inspired and titled HER FAMILY WISH. It’s a sweet romance about a female photographer and a hunky, single-dad school principal, and how they deal their scars – both internal and external – in order to figure out how to come out of the shadows and live life in full color.

This sounds like a great book. I was a pk for awhile and I have also run from public restrooms (once when I was 8mths pregnant and really had to go.) Thanks for the giveaway.
