with Shirley Kiger Connolly

Welcome to the Barn Door Book Loft, Shirley!
Is there a story behind this book?

The answer is yes, there is definitely a story behind it. What I wrote about dealt with a specific situation that happened during the 1800s but was hidden from the public eye as much as possible. After reading personal diaries, I could see the benefit of putting together a story that would offer a great message we could all learn from. It could also be an eye opener for many readers. People are really not so different today from those of yesteryear, who too often made the world think they were filled with innocence.

What kind of books do you enjoy reading?
Historical Romance more than anything if I'm not reading documentaries and books of research. I will read contemporaries, but I have a special love for the things of old, including the language and the culture.

If you were a style of music, what style would you be?
Classical…specifically Mozart. I'm a bit lively, and think strangely, and some people might believe I'm all over the place, a tiny bit like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was. I really enjoy listening to Mozart's classics.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
Oh, my! Just about everything I do is considered quirky by many. That's too hard to answer. Or maybe it would simply take too long.

Are there things you put off doing because you dread them?
Sometimes it is getting up in the morning before having that first cup of coffee.

What's your favorite meal with family and friends?
Thanksgiving dinner with ANYONE who will come to my home and share it. I go crazy decorating and getting everything ready, and I eat too much, but the day seems to linger forever in my mind even after. It is the one day out of the year that REALLY gives us a continuous opportunity to give thanks for so many things and share those special moments with those we love. Instead of my sharing a recipe here, since, every year I try to add one new dish, I'd love it if others passed along something with me!

Share a verse or Scripture passage with us that is special to you.
"Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand." Isaiah 41:10 NKJV

This is one of my many favorite scriptures because it reminds me constantly of how it's the Lord who gives me the strength and courage to say what's truly on my heart, to do what needs to be done, to step out in faith when I need to, and just to move forward, especially during those times when I begin to wonder at my own abilities. The truth is I can really do little correctly without Him going before me, anyway. I know I have to lean on Him. And I'm so glad I can.

When is your next book due out and can you tell us about it?
I have a free read coming out in December (It's the Prequel to Say Goodbye to Yesterday). Sometimes people want to know a little about the backstory that leads to a story, but it isn't appropriate to work it into the story itself. Thus comes the prequel.

My next book is the second in my Decisions series which will come out in the fall of 2012. The WIP is right now being called More Than a Ruby but that might change. It takes place several years after Say Goodbye to Yesterday, and I'm using the youngest daughter of my present heroine as the star of my next show so to speak. Geraldine is her name, and she's physically challenged, but also is a very strong character. She has a mind of her own, and she knows what she wants, and she's not afraid to tell people what she thinks, which many times young ladies tended to hide in the 1800s. What happens with her when she takes front stage? Well, we'll just have to wait and see.

You can purchase Say Goodbye to Yesterday from Amazon.

Shirley is giving away an ebook copy of Say Goodbye to Yesterday. To be entered in the book giveaway, leave a comment. You can enter the book giveaway twice--once on each spotlight post.
