Deanna K. Klingel's Avery's Battlefield

Deanna K. Klingel lives and writes in the mountains of western NC, with her husband and golden retriever Lily. Though life is quiet now, offering her peaceful writing times, it wasn't always so. Deanna and Dave raised their seven children, foster children and "extras" in Atlanta, GA, where the pace isn't really slow Southern shuttling about with Scouts, church activities, soccer, other sports, car pools, different schools, and an IBM husband who traveled. Whew! Now in retirement, the writer that was always within, is finally free to be, with total support from her husband and kids.

Avery's Battlefield

Avery and his dog, Gunner, have a good life in Kanawha Vally-a loving family, a prosperous farm, and a warm community of friends. Bu when the long unrest between the North and the South ignites into war, Avery's peaceful world is shattered. His father, brother, and uncle leave home, each drawn away by the war. Soon Avery and Gunner must begin a dangerous journey that will take them across the paths of people on both sides of the struggle. What can a simple farm boy bring to the war effort? A true heart, a healing hand, and a large supply of courage and faith. Avery discovers that his battlefield is in the clinics and hospitals, where the anger and the pain continue long after the fighting ends. Avery's Battlefield is the story of a boy, a dog, and their search for peace in the first years of the Civil War.

Here's a short excerpt of Avery's Battlefield:

Sliding down the slippery, muddy, hillside was treacherous and exhausting. Pausing under a cluster of trees to catch his breath, Avery slid his heavy gear to the ground and leaned against the tree. He hardly noticed the steady rain pelting his face, he was so tired. Avery didn't remember ever seeing it rain this many consecutive days in his life. Gunner lay down beside him.

Avery didn't know he'd dozed off until he was awakened by Gunner's excited barks and bellows.

Gunner bounded and danced in a wide circle increasing in distance away from Avery. Eyes wide open and Gunner at a far enough distance, Avery was able to see that what the dog was circling was a knot of two rattlesnakes coiled together. The gray timber rattlers were shaking their angry castanets and striking out at Gunner from two directions.
