with Miralee Ferrell

Welcome to the Barn Door Book Loft, Miralee!
How did you get started as a Christian fiction writer?

I’m not typical of most authors who have always wanted to write. I loved to read and enjoyed writing letters to friends, and even writing projects in school, but I never envisioned myself as an author, nor did I write short stories, even in my head.

What inspired me was a visiting pastor who prayed for me at a special service 5 yrs ago. After praying for a couple of minutes he shared with me that the Lord had told him I was supposed to be writing, and that whatever it was, it needed to be published. I prayed about that for 2 weeks, felt a definite confirmation, and started out.

To begin with I wrote out of obedience. Now, I write because I love it and can’t imagine not writing.

What are some of the challenges you face as an author?
I think the hardest is juggling several projects at once while trying to keep up with my home and personal life. The second is trying to figure out what’s going to happen when my characters refuse to tell me what comes next. I enjoy most aspects of writing, from marketing, to editing, to promoting, to the actual writing, but I hate getting stuck with no idea of where to go next. If I hit a wall, I typically shelve the project for a few days and let my brain work on it at nighttime, as that’s one of my most productive times for new ideas.

Is there a story behind this novel?
I’d had the idea for this book but only knew there would be a young woman raised in an outlaw band. I had no concept what she looked like or what her name might be. While drifting off to sleep one night, I saw a distinct picture of a black-haired woman in her early twenties with small bones, fine features, and wide, dark eyes. She proceeded to say, “My name is Angel. Angel Ramirez.” So, there you have it. I didn’t name Angel; she introduced herself to me.

What do you do to get away from it all?
I have three favorite things—riding horses with my daughter on the miles of trails leading from our property, gardening with my husband which gives us time to relax and chat away from the busyness of life, and curl up with a book by one of my favorite authors. I also love playing with my little dog (a long haired Chihuahua) and taking walks.

Tell us a little about the promotion you’re running right now for your new release.
Love Finds You in Sundance, Wyoming, officially releases August 1st. I’d love to see a big spike in my ratings on Amazon that day so I’m asking readers to purchase anytime ON August 1st. As a thank you for doing so, I’m giving away four gifts AND entering them in a drawing for a Starbucks gift card, an Amazon gift card and drawings for 3 of my other titles.

The four gifts are:

A four page epilogue that tells you what happens after the story ends (the book doesn't contain an epilogue...this was written just for you!)

* Five pages of recipes, some old family favorites used by my mother and grandmother

* A Sneak Peek at the first chapter of the new book I'm working on. That's right, you'll be the only group of people who get to read the first chapter BEFORE it releases!

* A fun list of baby names that were popular in 1889, when Angel Ramirez was riding the range in Sundance.

Great giveaway and interesting how the character came to you. I name the prim dolls that I make, and that's usually how it happens. The name just comes to me.
