with Raquel Byrnes

Welcome to the Barn Door Book Loft, Raquel!
What started you on your writing journey?

I use to jot down scenes in those black and white composition books all through jr high and high school, but it wasn’t until my daughter was born and I had a lot of time at home that I began to flesh out an entire story.

What distracts you from writing the easiest?
My children. I homeschool all six of them so I have to set a side time specifically to write.

What kind of books do you enjoy reading?
I like contemporary romance and cop procedurals. I am a huge fan of older mysteries.

Which character in your new release most interested you while you wrote?
Salem did. He is the assistant/quasi side-kick of my heroine. He looks like he comes from money; like he belongs in the Hamptons, but that’s by design. He was a street kid and there’s a lot of layers there.

If you were a style of music, what style would you be?
Probably creepy bayou swamp music.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
I took an underground tour of Seattle’s sewers…does that count?

What is your strangest habit?
I have to have trail mix when I write…but I separate all of the ingredients into piles and eat the one with the most first. I might have some issues.

Are there things you put off doing because you dread them?
Public speaking. My teeth sweat and my hands go numb…it looks like I’m going before a firing squad.

What's your favorite meal with family and friends?
My kids love this concoction called Lasagna Soup. It’s very tasty and we got it out of Family Fun magazine. We have it a couple of times a month.

Are there spiritual themes you like to write about?
I like to write about grace. We are flawed, fallen people, and yet we are mightily loved beyond all reason. It’s so important for people to know that they don’t have to be perfect to be a Christian. God meets us where we’re at and goes from there.

Share a verse or Scripture passage with us that is special to you.
Micah 6:8
He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly, and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
It helps me to keep my head on straight and know how to act. Be fair, be merciful, be humble. Pretty clear.

When is your next book due out and can you tell us about it?
My debut novel, Purple Knot, released on June 3rd from White Rose Publishing. It’s a romantic suspense with an edge-of-your-seat pace.
It follows Reyna Cruz, a private detective, who returns to Seattle to solve her best friend’s murder. She is forced to team up with her ex-fiancĂ© and as their romance rekindles, so do the memories of what tore them apart. When the killer turns the tables, they may not survive the secrets her investigation uncovers long enough to have a second chance at love.

Purchase Purple Knot at Amazon.

Raquel is giving away a copy of Purple Knot. To be entered in the book giveaway, leave a comment. You can enter the book giveaway twice--once on each spotlight post.
