with Dorothy Love

Welcome to the Barn Door Book Loft, Dorothy!
What started you on your writing journey?

My dad read to me before I was old enough to walk. I grew up loving words and stories. A third grade teacher encouraged my writing, and from then on, I didn’t want to do anything else.

What distracts you from writing the easiest?
With close deadlines, I am fairly focused. I have to be disciplined about e-mail, though.

What kind of books do you enjoy reading?
As a writer of historical fiction I read a lot of nonfiction as background for my novels. I love biographies and of course, fiction. Being a Southern girl, I love stories by Southern writers both literary and commercial—Reynolds Price, Eudora Welty, Pat Conroy, Josephine Humphries…I could go on and on. Amy Green’s novel, Bloodroot blew me away. I love anything by Tamera Alexander, Julie Lessman, Lynn Austin, and Siri Mitchell.

Which character in your new release most interested you while you wrote?
I get caught up in the lives of all my characters. I had a lot of fun writing Lillian and Bea,the cantankerous characters in this book.

If you were a style of music, what style would you be?
Probably country/rock. A country song, as Merle Haggard once said, “ain’t nothing but three chords and the truth.” I love the storytelling in country songs.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
When I was teaching at a small college in the Midwest, a friend dared me to sing with his rock band. It was definitely out of my comfort zone, but I did it, and had a blast.

Are there things you put off doing because you dread them?
Cleaning out my office. By the time I finish a book, my office looks like a whirlwind hit it.

What's your favorite meal with family and friends?
Sunday dinner Southern style: Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, fried okra, cornbread, tomatoes still warm from the sun, squash, Mississippi silverskin peas, cold watermelon, a gallon of iced tea, and for dessert, a bowl of Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla ice cream.

Are there spiritual themes you like to write about?
Forgiveness , the giving and receiving of it, always finds its way into my work.

Share a verse or Scripture passage with us that is special to you.
Romans 8: 38-39 ”For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth nor any other creature shall be able to separate us from the love of God which in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
I love this reminder that He meets us where we are and never leaves us.

When is your next book due out and can you tell us about it?
Beauty For Ashes, the second Hickory Ridge novel will be out February of 2012. It’s the story of Carrie Daly, a beautiful young widow, and Griff Rutledge, a charming Southern gentlemen from Charleston, both in need of a place to call home.
