with Roxanne Rustand

Welcome to the Barn Door Book Loft, Roxanne!
What started you on your writing journey?

I've always been a voracious reader, and I loved to write in college but never dreamed that becoming a writer was even possible. Years later, my friend, Judy Roemerman, introduced me to a wonderful romance author and I was instantly hooked. Eventually she invited me to her critique group, where I met Lyn Cote. Lyn became an inspirational author and I went the secular route, but later Lyn was a wonderful mentor to me in my transition to inspirational fiction. I owe Judy and Lyn a great deal!

What distracts you from writing the easiest?
Just about anything. A true lifesaver has been a little program called Mac Freedom, which shuts down all of my access to the Internet for whatever time I set. When I'm on deadline, I'll set it for eight hour stretches!

What kind of books do you enjoy reading?
I love contemporary romance, both secular and inspirational, but will read anything I can get my hands on. Some of my favorite secular authors are Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Kristan Higgins, Cindy Gerard and Kylie Brant. In inspirational, once I start naming favorites I just won’t know where to stop!

If you were a style of music, what style would you be?
My tastes are so eclectic that I'm not sure where to even begin!

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
It's important for me to do enough research for each book, so that readers can fall into the story and not be jarred out of it by errors and incongruities. One of my favorite experiences was when I got to ride with a rodeo contractor for the book Rodeo!, which was a Superromance from some years back. I loved spending time on the backlots, watching the cowboys get ready to compete, watching the clowns get into costume, and having a chance to learn a lot of details about the rodeo contractor business. I got to interview a lot of people in rodeo for that book, some quite influential, and it was an amazing experience!

What's your favorite meal with family and friends?

I love summer. We grill out all the time, and I adore fall-off-the-bone ribs, marinated flank steak, super-sweet sweet corn, salads and watermelon. I've got some favorite recipes on my website, but here's one salad that I love to make for a crowd:
Roxanne Rustan - Becky's Salad

Share a verse or Scripture passage with us that is special to you.
I love the following verse, and have used it a number of times at the front of my books. It's a powerful reminder to me that I need to turn everything over to God, and all will be well. I have it on my refrigerator, in my planner, and posted in my office!

"Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. If you do this, you will experience God's peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus." {Philippians 4:6-7, NLT

When is your next book due out and can you tell us about it?
I'll have six books out in 2011. Murder at Granite Falls (Love Inspired Suspense) is out in April, followed by Second Chance Dad (Love Inspired) in June, A Loner's Thanksgiving Wish (Love Inspired) in November, and Duty to Protect (Love Inspired Suspense) in December. I also have two books in the Harlequin Heartwarming Collection coming out in October and November.

I'm excited about Second Chance Dad (June) as it's just my second non-suspense out of the thirty I've written. It's fun trying something entirely different, and I enjoyed writing the hero and heroine in that book!
