Lena Nelson Dooley's Clash

In Love Finds You in Golden, New Mexico, inspirational romance writer, Lena Nelson Dooley, captured my attention in the very first paragraph:

“Are you plumb crazy?” Jeremiah Dennison’s loud retort bounced around the main room of the adobe house and returned to mock him. “Where did you get such a harebrained idea?”

Something about that opening line stirred vivid, somewhat giggly, images in my mind and had me clamoring to read more.

Trying to control his anger, he shoved his clenched fists into his denim trousers’ pockets, paced to the window, and stared out, pay¬ing scant attention to the piƱon trees bending in the wind. He loved Philip Smith like a father, but the man could vex the weather. And this latest idea was the most farfetched yet.

Philip gave a snort. “Harebrained?” He put his rocking chair into motion that sent out a rhythmic squeaking. “Why’d ya say that? It’s worked fer other men.”

Needless to say, I had a blast hosting Lena’s clash. She competed in our Best Opening Hook, Historical category.

After her competition, I asked her some rather personal questions…like…”Where does all that romance come from, Lena. Do tell, Lena. Anyone with that many books in print must know a thing or two about true love, moonlit walks and candle-lit dinners.”

Turns out, I was right!

“I write a bit of James into every hero I create,” Lena said. “He has been a strong, silent man who has matured into someone who cherishes and protects me.”

And based on her success, not only with this COTT conquering novel, but with all twenty-eight of her other books, readers love her “bits-of-James” heroes. But what they appear to love even more is the level of spirituality Lena brings into her novels. As one reader puts it, “The characters' faiths are a very real part of the novel. I really appreciated the fact that the characters live out their faith from day-to-day.”

If you happened to read the article Clash of the Titles Assistant Editor, Michelle Massaro wrote on Christian fiction evangelism, you know that is one of the biggest reasons we do what we do. There is nothing we love more than helping connect readers with great Christian authors, because in doing so, we know we are in turn connecting you with the Divine Author, Jesus Christ.

Lena’s COTT competing novel is about an 1890, Golden, New Mexico, mining town where men far outnumber women. So when an old wealthy miner named Philip Smith finds himself in need of a nursemaid, he places an ad for a mail-order bride—despite the protests of his friend Jeremiah. Hoping to escape a perilous situation back East, young Madeleine Mercer answers the ad and arrives in town under a cloud of suspicion. But just as she begins to win over Philip—and Jeremiah himself—the secrets she left behind threaten to follow her to Golden...and tarnish her character beyond redemption.

Next week, April Gardner will introduce you to Lena’s competitor, Tiffany Amber Stockton and her COTT competing novel, Liberty’s Promise.
